About Us
Shared Mobility has over 20 years of experience designing and implementing community-focused transportation programs that are built to last
Shared Mobility (SMI) Inc. does more than help communities plan transportation programs. We launch, operate, and sustain them.
For nearly two decades, SMI has developed and tested operational models for bikeshare, carshare, e-bike libraries, e-bike rebate programs, and other community transportation services.
This firsthand experience gives us a practical understanding of what programs need to succeed beyond the pilot stage, from staffing and vendor coordination to financial planning, performance management, and daily operations.
Our goal is not simply to launch new programs, but to build systems that are sustainable, scalable, and adaptable to the communities they serve.
SMI provides hands-on support throughout the life of a shared mobility program, including:
Shared mobility planning, program design, and launch
Procurement support, vendor selection, and contract coordination
Operational planning, staffing, and organizational development
Financial planning and long-term sustainability
Fleet deployment, technology integration, and asset management
Customer experience, community partnerships, and outreach
Performance measurement, reporting, and continuous improvement
Program expansion, replication, and long-term operations
Operating since 2009 · New York State

E-bike libraries allow residents to experience the benefits of an e-bike without the cost of purchasing one. But operating a successful library requires much more than a fleet of bicycles. It requires thoughtful systems for lending, participant orientation, maintenance, battery charging, inventory management, staffing, safety, and data collection.
SMI works with community-based organizations to design and operate e-bike library programs that respond directly to local transportation needs. We provide partners with the tools, training, and technical support needed to build sustainable programs, while ensuring that each organization retains a central role in shaping how its program serves the community.
Communities understand their own needs best. Our role is to help trusted local organizations access the resources and operational knowledge needed to turn that understanding into effective transportation solutions.
Our partners include:
Buffalo, NY
Niagara Falls, NY
Carlisle, PA
Los Angeles County, CA
Westchester County, NY
Together, we have developed programs serving low-income residents, people returning from incarceration, and communities facing significant transportation barriers, including limited public transit, unsafe bicycle infrastructure, and limited access to bicycles or cars.
These partnerships combine SMI’s technical and operational experience with the knowledge, relationships, and leadership of community-based organizations. Mobility justice is at the center of this work, ensuring that communities have both a voice in shaping transportation programs and the capacity to operate solutions designed around their needs.
Communities do not always need a new operator. Sometimes they need an experienced partner who can strengthen an existing program, solve operational challenges, or prepare a system for growth. SMI can provide targeted support or serve as a long-term operating partner. Because we operate transportation systems ourselves, our recommendations are grounded in the practical realities of budgets, staffing, equipment, technology, customer needs, and day-to-day service delivery.
Bikeshare, carshare, and other shared mobility programs often work best in denser neighborhoods, cities, and town centers where people can easily connect to jobs, transit, businesses, and everyday destinations. But every community is different, and successful programs can take many forms
Yes. SMI works with municipalities, transit agencies, community organizations, consultants, and other partners to evaluate opportunities and determine what type of program makes sense for a community. Contact us at info@sharedmobility.org and we can discuss your community, potential partners, funding opportunities, and next steps.
As a nonprofit, SMI approaches operations differently. We prioritize transparency, long-term sustainability, and community outcomes over generating profits for shareholders. We work openly with our public, private, and nonprofit partners on costs, challenges, and performance, with the goal of building transportation programs that communities can understand, support, and sustain.
