Shared Mobility Inc.’s work in the Capital Region began more than a decade ago with the planning and piloting of a regional bikeshare system. Working alongside local and regional partners, SMI helped introduce bikeshare in Albany, Schenectady, Troy, and Saratoga Springs.
The pilot demonstrated strong demand for bikeshare and helped establish the partnerships, community support, and local framework needed to turn a temporary demonstration into a long-term transportation service.

The success of the pilot helped pave the way for the Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) to incorporate bikeshare into the region’s public transportation network.
With CDTA taking ownership and CDPHP joining as the title sponsor, CDPHP Cycle! officially launched in 2017 with 160 bicycles across four municipalities.
CDTA has been a trailblazer among transit agencies, demonstrating how bikeshare can function as an integrated part of a regional mobility network—not simply as a standalone transportation service.
Today, CDPHP Cycle! is part of CDTA’s growing portfolio of mobility services, connecting bikeshare with the region’s broader public transportation system.
Over the past decade, CDPHP Cycle! has grown significantly, expanding from a small fleet of standard bicycles into a regional system with more than 500 standard and electric bikes serving communities throughout the Capital Region.
Since its launch, riders have taken:
Bikeshare trips
1M+
Miles traveled
1.2M+
The system supports a wide range of everyday transportation needs, including:
First- and last-mile connections to public transit
Commuting
Errands and daily trips
Recreation
Connections between communities and destinations throughout the Capital Region
For Shared Mobility Inc., CDPHP Cycle! demonstrates how sustainable shared mobility can grow from a local pilot into a long-term public transportation service.
The model is built around:
Testing the concept through a regional pilot and using the results to guide future growth.
Bringing together public agencies, private partners, and communities to build support for bikeshare.
Establishing committed local leadership to ensure the system can respond to the needs of the region.
Creating an operating model that can expand as community demand and transportation needs evolve.
What began as a regional bikeshare pilot has evolved into a long-term public transportation service serving communities across the Capital Region.
CDPHP Cycle! is also one of the relatively few transit agency-owned bikeshare systems in the country, demonstrating how bikeshare can be integrated directly into a regional transit network.
Looking, thinking, and working ahead.
