WNY E-Bike Pilot

Shared Mobility, Inc. is piloting shared e-bikes in Buffalo and Niagara Falls this summer. With this E-Bike Pilot, we’re laying the groundwork for a more equitable and sustainable future. Affordable, accessible, and equitable mobility is a human right and actualizing this principle is foundational to our future vision of shared e-bikes in Buffalo and Niagara Falls. With this program, we hope to make bicycling more accessible in our communities than ever in the coming years.

With 50 e-bikes stationed at a handful of locations around Buffalo, riders will be able to take the bikes for a spin for free throughout the duration of the program. E-Bike Pilot stations will include locations at the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Seneca One, the Buffalo Museum of Science and PUSH Buffalo's School 77 on the West Side.

E-bikes can take you farther

First time riding an e-bike, and you don’t know what to expect? E-bikes are bikes that give you a boost! We think it will transform the world of transportation and open up biking to many more. The gentle assist helps you get up those hills and makes headwinds a thing of the past.

You’ll be amazed at how much further you can ride on an e-bike, all while still giving you the opportunity to get some exercise and fresh air.

How to get involved

Are you interested in joining our community of e-bike riders? We’re looking for pilot riders who are highly motivated to appreciate these incredible community assets as we test out a new mobility program in Western New York. If you are interested in being involved, please begin by filling out the survey materials below. Participation is completely free, however we are only able to support a limited number of riders this summer.

Pilot riders get acquainted with the program and the e-bikes through in person orientation sessions, held outside in a socially distanced setting. Haven’t touched an e-bike before? No problem! Orientation sessions will turn any pedal bike rider into an e-bike rider. Orientations will also be an opportunity for riders to get to know each other and us, a key part of our vision with this project: broadening the community of bicycle riders throughout our region.

Alongside this Pilot, East Side Bike Club and Create a Healthier Niagara Falls Collaborative will lead E-Bike Library programming on Buffalo's East Side and in Niagara Falls respectively. E-Bike Libraries are community led initiatives to make e-bikes freely available to community members through group rides and other programming. To learn more about the E-Bike Library programs, visit East Side Bike Club’s Facebook or Create a Healthier Niagara Falls Collaborative’s website.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to pedal on an e-bike?

Our e-bikes are pedal assist, which means the assist only engages when you are pedaling. With each pedal you’ll feel like a gentle wind is allowing you to sail just a bit further. Our e-bikes do not have a throttle.

Who runs the E-Bike Pilot?

We are Shared Mobility, Inc. We are the nonprofit team that operates Reddy Bikeshare. The SMI and Reddy teams work in tandem to support one another’s growth. We know e-bikes can open up the world of biking to a wider audience and we’re excited to get more folks out biking with this program.

Where can I legally ride an e-bike?

Yes! E-bikes can be legally operated on any city street in Buffalo. However, keep in mind that riding an e-bike on the sidewalk is illegal … After all, sidewalks are designed for pedestrians, not cyclists.
